Has heaven ever seemed like it might be an endless game lobby filled with NPCs that wander around in a digital world with no storyline or kingdoms to conquer? Like an eternal post-game map where all the quests are finished, there’s no more adventure left, and everyone is just floating around pretending to be happy?

Not a game you’d be dying to play, is it?

The Bible says that heaven is the ultimate reward that God has in store for us. But how can it be the greatest place of all time if the adventure ends, and everyone is a disembodied spirit that plays the harp and floats around on clouds?

To be honest, that picture of heaven is nothing like what the Bible actually describes. The real heaven is way better than any open-world game, because it’s not an escape from reality—it’s the ultimate reality!

Let’s find out what the Bible actually says about heaven.

Heaven Is Totally for Real

Just before He died, Jesus gave His friends (and us) this amazing promise: “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:2, 3).

Heaven is a real place for real people. Jesus is there now preparing YOUR place—your room in His house. Close your eyes and imagine your ideal room—your ideal life. Got that picture in your mind? Heaven is better than that. Way better!

The Bible describes heaven as having streets of gold (yes, the stuff we think is so valuable here is just pavement there), gemstones in the walls, fruitful trees, homes to live in, gardens to plant, animals to enjoy, and people to be with.

You can read all about it in Isaiah 65:17–25 and Revelation chapters 21 and 22. It’s going to be the most beautiful, wonderful place you can imagine.

No More Pain

Life in this world can be pure pain at times. Way too many people suffer here. Abuse, bullying, depression, handicaps, racism, disappointment, fear, exhaustion, loneliness, persecution, low self-worth, broken families—all of these things are the result of sin. Sometimes that pain is the result of our own sins. Often it is because of someone else’s sins. And sometimes no one is at fault—it’s just what happens because we live in a broken world.

Thankfully, heaven will have none of that brokenness. “But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life” (Revelation 21:27). Nothing that is connected to sin or that can cause pain will be in heaven.

Instead, heaven will be a place where God heals everything that was broken on this earth. “They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat; for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes” (Revelation 7:16, 17).

God Is With Us

The best part of heaven is who we get to be with—Jesus. He is the main character in all the very best ways. He is loving and just, merciful and strong. He sacrificed Himself to rescue you and win the ultimate quest. He will be the center of attention, not because He’s asking for it, but because He is the reason we are all there.

“Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away” (Revelation 21:3, 4).

God will be with us. With you! You might not understand it fully yet, but if you keep seeking God, you will discover that there is nothing (and yes, I mean NOTHING) that is better than knowing and loving and worshiping God. Being with Him is the ultimate adventure.

Epic Adventure

Heaven won’t be boring. It’s the place where all your best dreams will come true.

  • Longing for someone to understand you and love you forever? Jesus will be all that to you and so much more.
  • Love music for all the feels? You’ll get to make the most incredible music imaginable.
  • Looking for the thrill of an adventure? God’s whole universe will be yours to explore.
  • Yearning for freedom to be yourself? You’ll discover who you were made to be when you are free from sin.
  • Wishing for friends? Heaven will be full of people with amazing stories who want to be your friend. And you’ll never ever have to say goodbye.

Video games might be fun, but at some point, you always have to come back to real life. Heaven won’t be like that. Heaven is the real deal. The servers will never shut down. The game is never over. For all of eternity, you’ll get to enjoy the delights of the true world—not just as an avatar, but as yourself. IRL.
